Dear Travel Advisor,
Whether you are a veteran to the segment or have yet to sell a single cabin on a river
cruise ship, now is the time to grow your river cruise sales.
By all measures, river cruise guests are seasoned, veteran travelers. They want to
travel through the world and not to destinations, with fewer travelers surrounding
them. And while river cruises were once considered the sole domain of affluent
travelers, the consumer pool has opened up to include younger, less affluent and
traditional guests.
Travel advisors have long been the drivers of that business and those guests to the
rivers. Even with some river cruise lines doing consumer marketing on TV or radio,
advisors are still the ones needed to educate consumers about the segment and its
pricing and protocols. They have long been, and continue to be, the most reliable sales
channel for river cruise lines. And with the market expanding with new ships and new
rivers, advisors are going to continue to be important in the segment’s success.
TMR undertook this Outlook on Trends in River Cruise Segment for 2022 to help
advisors – and river cruise lines – understand the market and the advisors’ role
within it. We surveyed over 750 travel advisors to get you the information you need
to succeed in the market. On the following pages, you’ll find information on how
the trade is marketing to river cruise line clients, why consumers want to book river
