American Airlines is now allowing passengers to use their AAdvantage miles to purchase food and drinks from its onboard menu.
The option is available only for flights operated by American, not by its partners such as American Eagle. It is also limited to alcoholic drinks on domestic flights longer than 250 miles and snacks on flights longer than 1,300 miles.
Flyers must ensure their AAdvantage number is on their reservation and then scan their boarding pass when making a purchase.
Here’s a look at some of what American offers on its in-flight menu, along with the corresponding mileage cost:
Drinks:
- Beer (including Bud Light, Dos Equis, and Truly): 900 miles
- Premium beer (including Goose IPA and Heineken): 1,000 miles
- Wine and sparkling wine: 1,000 miles
- Spirits (including Bacardi, Dewar’s, Jack Daniel’s, and Tito’s): 1,000 miles
Snacks:
- Sea salt roasted almonds: 800 miles
- Doritos Minis Cool Ranch: 500 miles
- Fruit and cheese plate: 1,100 miles
The miles are generally valued at about 10 cents each. Those wanting to pay with dollars will spend $9 for a beer and $10 for most other offerings.
