Luxury travelers have two new resorts to visit in Costa Rica: Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve and Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique.
The Ritz-Carlton Reserve opened earlier this year, while the Waldorf Astoria is taking reservations for stays beginning April 22. The openings are part of a larger push into luxury for Costa Rica, which saw a post-pandemic boost and is now leaning into sustainable tourism growth through upscale experiences.
Adalberto Rodriguez, executive of promotion and development of the leisure segment at the Costa Rican Tourism Board, told Travel Market Report that the country “has become renowned as a premier luxury destination, attracting affluent travelers who are eager for personalized, immersive experiences that mix indulgence with nature, wellness, and adventure.”
“Luxury tourism is thriving in Costa Rica, particularly in regions such as the Nicoya Peninsula, the Papagayo Peninsula, and, more recently, the Southern Pacific,” he added, noting that Costa Rica is “committed to highlighting its smaller, emerging destinations, catering to discerning travelers seeking unique, uncharted experiences.”

The country established a program, Integral Management of Tourist Destinations Program (GID), to ensure that tourism is spread throughout the country – not concentrated in one place. Another more off-the-beaten-path destination is Golfo Dulce, where steadily increasing tourism is aiding the local economy, Rodriguez noted.
He also emphasized that nearly 30% of the country is protected land, so there are plenty of areas for travelers to enjoy the unspoiled nature. Some popular adventure activities in Costa Rica are ziplining through rain and cloud forests, white water rafting, diving, and horseback riding. It is also known for its wellness retreats, classic beach vacations, and cultural offerings such as gastronomic experiences, like the Espiritu Santo Coffee Tour.
Key U.S. cities such as Boston, Seattle, North Carolina have recently added direct flights to the destination. San Francisco is next, with a route launching May 24. The new flights come along with the two newest luxury resorts that the tourism board is most excited about.
“These additions further position Costa Rica as a premier destination for those seeking immersive, high-end stays in a setting that remains deeply connected to sustainability and adventure,” Rodriguez said, “The destination is also well-known for being nature’s playground, encompassing top of the line travel packages, offerings, and operators all within its lush landscapes.”
Here’s a closer look at the new Costa Rica resorts.
Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

The word Nekajui derives from an indigenous term meaning “lush garden” — and that’s exactly what guests step into when they stay at Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve since its opening in February.
Nekajui is located within Peninsula Papagayo, a private resort and club community that’s currently home to Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, Andaz Costa Rica Resort, Prieta Beach Club, the Arnold Palmer Ocean Course, Marina Papagayo, and many oceanfront houses and villas.
Costa Rica’s Ritz-Carlton Reserve features 107 ocean-facing rooms, including suites, three luxury treetop tents, and 36 residences. The Nekajui Grand Villa is the largest, most lavish for short-term guests.
The resort offers several eateries, including the coffee house, outdoor poolside eats, Lain American and international restaurants, and the Mediterranean-inspired Niri Beach Club. There’s also a fitness center, spa, hot tub, and kids’ activities.
Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique

On the cliffside peninsula of Cacique on the secluded Playa Penca, this soon-to-open Waldorf Astoria resort overlooks the Pacific Ocean and surrounding forest. It’s located 17 miles from the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport.
The property offers seclusion and privacy in its 148 guest rooms and 40 suites. Room categories range from single king and double queen beds to large suites with plunge pools, including the Waldorf Astoria Presidential Suite, a three-bedroom accommodation that sleeps eight.
The resort also features six restaurants and the brand’s signature Peacock Alley Bar that will offer locally inspired cocktails and small bites.
Waldorf Astoria Spa boasts multi-level pools, a gym, and an indoor-outdoor movement and yoga studio. The resort also offers family-friendly activities in the kids center and teen club.
