Disney Cruise Line to Build Two New Ships
by Daniel McCarthyDisney Cruise Line has signed an agreement with Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany to build two new ships that will debut in 2021 and 2023.
Disney made the announcement Thursday at its annual shareholder meeting in Chicago.
“The expansion of our Disney fleet will allow us to create even more magical memories for families at sea and in incredible cruise destinations around the world,” said Walt Disney Company CEO and Chairman Roger A. Iger.
The ships will be 135,000 gross tons, slightly larger than the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy—its two most recent builds that are both 129,690 gross tons.
Both ships will feature 1,250 staterooms—the same number as each the Dream and Fantasy.
The first Disney Cruise Line ship—the Disney Magic—debuted in 1998 and had room for 875 staterooms and 2,400 guests. The other ship—the Disney Wonder—debuted a year later with the same dimensions and number of staterooms.
Though Disney didn’t announce where the ships will sail—or their names—Disney Cruise Line has a contract with the Port Canaveral port authority until 2023 that allows them to homeport two ships. Still, it’s unclear if they’ll sail out of Florida.
The news comes as the tourism side of the Walt Disney Company continues to expand. This week, the company announced that Disney World will add “Frozen” and “Star Wars” rides, lights, and special effects in each of the Florida parks.
