WestJet Changes Carry-On Baggage Size Rules

WestJet is bringing its carry-on size policies in line with other major airlines.

Starting May 6, WestJet will implement new maximum dimensions for carry-on bags to match those of other major North American carriers, including Delta Air Lines, one of its partners. The new maximum size—21 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches—is one inch narrower than the airline’s previous limit of 21 inches by 15 inches by 9 inches.

For comparison, Air Canada’s carry-on size limit is 21.5 inches by 15.5 inches by 9 inches.

WestJet said it will begin delivering new baggage sizing devices to all of its airports on March 13, giving travelers time to adjust their luggage if needed. The change also includes all Sunwing aircraft that are set to join the WestJet fleet in the spring.

“We expect this change will help streamline check-in and boarding times by eliminating the inconsistency between WestJet and several other carriers,” said Colleen Tynan, vice president of experience management. “Introducing a new standard size ensures more bags fit on more flights, so we expect this to have a big impact on the overall experience on board.”
