Costa Rica Establishes Safety Protocols For The Poás Volcano Area

With activity at the Poás Volcano picking up since mid-April, Costa Rica’s National Emergency Commission (CNE) has established a preventive 3.5-kilometer security perimeter around the volcano and closed Poás Volcano National Park “ indefinitely.”

A “green” alert has been issued for five districts of Alajuela by the Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) due to “continuous phreatic eruptions” at the volcano since April 13. Local media report that the trails are layered with ash, and there is danger of falling rocks.

Tourist activities, hotels, restaurants and tours outside this security perimeter continue to operate normally, the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT), noted in a press release, including strawberry tours, coffee tours, trout fishing, hiking, adventure activities and the Fraijanes.

Lagoon, and the Juan Santamaría and Daniel Oduber international airports continue to operate normally.

But tourists should avoid the restricted area within the Bajos del Toro river basin, which includes the Desagüe, Agrio, Palomo and Anonos rivers and the Gata ravine, as well as the hills and mountains surrounding.
