Waldorf Astoria New York to Close in March for Renovations
by Jessica MontevagoThe 85-year-old Waldorf Astoria New York will close March 1 for at least two years of renovations. The plans also include upgrading the hotel’s technology and adding more than 1,000 private apartments.
The landmark hotel on Park Avenue opened in 1931 and quickly became known for lavish parties and high-profile guests, including the Duke of Windsor, Frank Sinatra and Winston Churchill.
Chinese acquirer Anbang Insurance Group—the company that unsuccessfully bid on Starwood Hotels & Resorts— bought the Waldorf last year for a record $1.95 billion. Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. will continue to manage the property when it reopens.
