Anyone who has flown into Cancun International Airport knows there is one main highway that runs along the coastline to most resorts. When traveling south, many properties sit behind gated entrances, accessible by turning left off the main thoroughfare. But to reach the distinctive, luxurious hidden gem of Wakax Hacienda—a member of Mr & Mrs Smith and Small Luxury Hotels of the World—your driver will take a right turn … onto a dirt road, along narrow, winding paths and into the interior jungle of Tulum, Mexico. And that’s just the beginning of the nature-infused adventure awaiting travelers who choose Wakax Hacienda.
Upon arrival, you’re welcomed warmly by a small team of staff embodying a bygone era of thoughtful hospitality. You’re then guided through an unassuming stone archway onto a meandering path wrapped in jungle greenery and sweetened by the calls of birds and other wildlife. As you take deep, relaxing breaths, you soon arrive at a classic architectural jewel built in the traditional 18th-century colonial style of a Yucatán hacienda. Nestled within a vast stretch of pristine jungle, Wakax Hacienda is a sanctuary that honors regional authenticity, redefines luxury, and offers a tranquil escape.
Nature by Excellence
Set on a 160-hectare estate, Wakax Hacienda is steeped in nature. The grounds feature turquoise cenotes, an emerald freshwater lagoon, underground rivers, and meandering paths leading to private, serene hideaways. Eduardo Patrón, CEO of Wakax Hacienda, calls the property “Nature by excellence”—a claim that proves true upon visiting.
Cenote Nohoch, a private sinkhole of fresh and salty water, is perfect for decompressing along its mystical shores. One afternoon, I chose to spend time at El Cocal, the lagoon, swimming in calm waters, paddleboarding, kayaking, or simply relaxing in a hammock with nature all around. There are also three pools discreetly tucked away on the property.
Another highlight is the yoga palapa and the Temazcal, a traditional hot steam lodge. Hidden along leafy jungle paths, these areas—with their own refreshing cenotes—offer spiritually uplifting, isolated experiences. The on-site spa complements these with treatments rooted in ancient healing practices, delivering a holistic wellness experience.
Throughout the property, warm and natural materials—wood, stone, bamboo, thatch, rope, terracotta, and neutral tones—create a harmonious connection with nature.

A Glimpse Into Traditional Hacienda Life
Wakax Hacienda stands out for its commitment to preserving the traditional Mexican hacienda experience while integrating modern comforts.
Architecture reflects colonial influences, with courtyards, archways, and colorful tiles creating a nostalgic yet inviting atmosphere. A grassy courtyard acts as the central square, flanked by the main building with its arched entryways and colonial chandeliers, a small church landscaped with gardens and ponds, and El Palacio Municipal, home to elegant gathering rooms, local art, and scenic garden views. It’s easy to imagine a destination wedding or multigenerational celebration here, brimming with joy and tradition.

The resort features just 47 rooms across six categories, from the Standard King Double to the Master Two-Bedroom Villa With Plunge Pool. Each room is designed to reflect Yucatán living, with handcrafted furnishings, local textiles, and private terraces overlooking gardens or tranquil water features. Every room is unique.
A standout feature of the rooms is the texture of the floors and walls, made of chukum—a traditional Mayan construction material crafted from the resin and bark of the Havardia albicans tree. This eco-friendly, moisture-resistant material stays cool even in the heat and humidity, adding both comfort and a tactile connection to local tradition.
Dining at Wakax Hacienda is a culinary journey. Menus celebrate regional flavors with three à la carte meals daily. Whether you enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars or a casual brunch by the pool, each meal pays homage to Mexico’s gastronomic heritage. I especially enjoyed an al fresco lunch and cocktails overlooking the tranquil lagoon.
Excursions That Enrich the Soul
Wakax Hacienda offers curated excursions designed to deepen guests’ connection with the land and its people.
A two-hour bicycle tour winds through five miles of pristine jungle and includes a visit to the Hacienda’s Mayan Village to explore traditional crafts and customs. The Underground River Experience offers a guided swim through nearby cenotes, with breathtaking caverns, ancient formations, and insight into their sacred importance to the Mayan people.
Culinary classes and mezcal tastings are also available for food and drink lovers. Guests can learn to make Yucatecan dishes or explore the nuances of Mexico’s iconic spirit.
Those craving more activity can explore downtown Tulum, just 15 minutes away. Director Litzie Vázquez also recommends nearby attractions such as the Tulum ruins, Valladolid, Coba ruins, Chichen Itza, and the Muyil canals.

A Retreat for the Refined Traveler
Wakax Hacienda is not for the mass-market traveler. It lacks endless daily activities or late-night party scenes. Instead, it draws discerning guests seeking authenticity, cultural depth, and a genuine connection to nature and community.
Patrón puts it this way: “To live an authentic Mexican discrete luxury experience. A different property in Riviera Maya, with multiple outdoor activities and the comfort of a warm friendly service for disconnecting and recharging energy.”
Guests may include couples seeking seclusion, those planning a destination wedding, solo travelers on a journey of reflection, or families celebrating special milestones.
For travel advisors, Wakax Hacienda offers the chance to present a luxurious yet authentic Tulum experience, far from the crowds. It’s a place where the rhythms of nature set the tone, where every detail tells a story, and where guests leave with a deeper appreciation for Mexico’s cultural richness.
This isn’t just a resort. It’s a journey into the heart of the Yucatán.
