Following a $40 million makeover, Bahia Principe Grand Tulum made its official debut on Nov. 15.
The Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts flagship property first arrived in Mexico over 20 years ago. It’s located within the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya Resort, just 60 minutes from the Cancun International Airport; in total, there are four resorts within the complex.
The reopening followed the company’s “rigorous safety and hygiene measures in place, which were developed in collaboration with HS Consulting, international consultants specialized in the tourism industry.”
The revamp drew inspiration from the Mayan culture. Rooms and common areas have a neutral color palette and textures that are inspired by the earth and surrounding nature, while the resorts’ guestrooms feature sleek design for ultimate comfort and functionality.
The resort offers seven dining venues, including Yucatan Buffet, Hindu Thai Restaurant, Gourmet Don Pablo, Mexicano Tequila, Restaurant Rodizio La Gran Tortuga, The Truck Beach Restaurant, Andale Burger, and La Isla Bar.

The water spaces include a Splash area with jets and games and aWater Park with outfitted with Mayan masks. In addition to three pools and beach area, guests can enjoy a relaxing spa with outdoor palapas for treatments alfresco, numerous green spaces and trails, water and land recreational activities, a fully equipped fitness center, shopping area, and a discotheque.
“Despite it being a very difficult year with many setbacks, we are very proud to open this resort as planned,” said Lluisa Salord, SVP Global Sales, Contracting & Distribution.
The project is part of Integrated Coastal Management Plan, which has five goals: improving the state of the beaches, achieving better management of resources, promoting the conservation of biodiversity, enhancing the sustainable management of the landscape, and promoting environmental awareness and education. In Mexico, the focus is on the recovery of the hydrodynamic balance of the bay, the restoration of the dune strip and the management of access and uses of the coastal area.
These efforts are supported by the Bahia Principe Ecological Foundation and its team of professionals who participate in all the conservation projects that Grupo Piñero has been carrying out in Mexico for more than 20 years.
