Rumors flew this week that some guests at Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort were being charged extra for beach chairs on the resort’s private beach. One user on a Maui subreddit said that they were charged $150 for two chairs and an umbrella at the beach, on top of the daily resort fee of $55.
However, a spokesperson for Grand Wailea told TMR that the resort is only charging for cabanas and, while there are some rules with their uses, beach chairs do not cost extra for resort guests. Here’s the statement:
“Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort is committed to providing all visitors with an elevated and engaging experiences. Beach and poolside chairs are available to hotel guests on a first come first serve basis, while further enhancements, such as cabanas, can be booked at cost.”
The chairs are available for checkout for all registered guests, and one person must be present for every two chairs per room, the resort’s policy reads. Because of rules with Hawaii’s Department of Land & Natural Resources, resort staff isn’t allowed to pre-set chairs on the beach, nor leave them unattended for longer than 30 minutes. All Grand Wailea equipment must also be removed from Wailea Beach before sundown.
Grand Wailea is one of the premier resorts in Maui and has been operating for more than 30 years. Most recently, the resort announced it was adding a Nobu restaurant, which will open in summer 2025.
Nobu at Grand Wailea will offer both indoor and outdoor seating and will feature a menu with dishes including Nobu’s signature Black Cod with Miso and Yellowtail Jalapeño.
