Canada’s New Passport System Creates Security Concerns
Canadian residents applying for new passports soon will not need to return the old ones—a move that will expedite the process but also allow a greater potential for fraud.
The new passport requirements go into effect Nov. 1 for online applications and Dec. 14 for paper ones. They say that old passports will be cancelled once new ones are issued, but, because they don’t have to be returned, they can still be used in any country that doesn’t have an agreement to share travel document data with Canada. An internal notice from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, obtained by CBC News, expressed concern that allowing people to hold two valid passports “increases the opportunities for forgery and fraudulent use of a travel document.”
