LaGuardia Marks a Major Milestone in Development Process

LaGuardia Marks a Major Milestone in Development Process

LaGuardia Airport has undergone a significant milestone in its redevelopment with the completion of the new headhouse for Terminal B.

The new 850,000-sq-ft headhouse, which serves as a main entry point for travelers using Terminal B, will also provide seamless connections to passenger concourses and gates, the parking garage, and the Central Hall leading to Terminal C and a future AirTrain system.

The headhouse’s first floor includes a new ground transportation center for arrivals, followed by the arrivals hall and baggage claim on level two, with check-in located on level three. The fourth floor features shops, restaurants and other customer amenities, as well as the concourse bridges.

According to Port Authority, this development landmark also indicated that the Terminal B redevelopment is now about 80% complete. Project officials say the next major breakthrough will be the opening of 7 out of 17 proposed new gates in the western concourse schedule for later this year.

On June 13, Terminal B’s Arrivals and Departures Hall was opened to ticketed passengers flying with American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Air Canada.

The spacious new facility will provide more opportunities for travelers to remain safe and socially distant, from check-in, security and baggage claim. The airport has also implemented new health and safety measures, like contactless technology and an increased focus on cleanliness and disinfection.

“The opening of the new Arrivals and Departures Hall at Terminal B is the biggest milestone to date in the transformation of LaGuardia Airport into a world-class transportation hub that is worthy of New York State,” said New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo.

“As we continue to upgrade and modernize this airport for the 21st century, this new state-of-the-art hall will offer passengers a unique travel experience with new concessions, traveler amenities and art installations by four of the world’s leading artists, while increasing space for passengers to move more safely and efficiently during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The ongoing $8 billion Airport renovation project – one of the largest public private partnerships in aviation history – was not delayed due to the pandemic, and is still scheduled to be fully completed in 2022.
