Malaysia Launches Country’s First Sharia-Based Airline
Malaysia’s first Sharia airline, Rayani Air, took its maiden flight Sunday with 150 passengers on board, traveling from the capital Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, the airline’s headquarters.
Following the rules of Islamic law, only halal food is provided on the flight and no alcohol is served. There will be recital of prayers upon take off, and Muslim women working in the cabin crew will be required to wear a hijab.
The airline, which flies to five domestic locations, hopes to offer flights to Mecca for the Umrah and Hajj pilgrimages in the coming years.
