The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has moved Norway to its highest-risk travel advisory category.
Because of a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, Norway is now at the highest level of the CDC’s COVID list, which warns U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the country unless fully vaccinated.
Norway has reached more than 500 cases per 100,000 residents in the past 28 days, which is the CDC’s criteria for its Level 4 Advisory list. The country does have a high vaccination rate—76% of its citizens have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccinations while 70% have received both.
“Avoid travel to these destinations. If you must travel to these destinations, make sure you are fully vaccinated before travel,” the CDC’s warning reads.
The warning comes just as Norway ends its COVID restrictions, an event that caused disturbances and clashes in the country’s streets as citizens celebrated the end of a year full of heavy restrictions.
Other countries on the Level 4 list currently include The Bahamas, Bermuda, Costa Rica, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Jamaica, Portugal, Spain, and more. The full list can be found here.
Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Sweden, and more all remain at Level 3 on the CDC’s list, which comes with an advisory to “Make sure you are fully vaccinated before traveling to these destinations. Unvaccinated travelers should avoid nonessential travel to these destinations”
