After closing ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Idalia, Tampa International Airport is reopening on Wednesday at 4 p.m. EST.
The airport said on Wednesday that it only sustained “minimal damage” from Hurricane Idalia, which reached Category 4 status before hitting Florida on Wednesday morning.
“TPA is fortunate to have avoided the worst effects of such a dangerous storm, after acting in an abundance of caution to protect the safety of our passengers, employees and facilities,” Tampa International Airport CEO Joe Lopano said on Wednesday. “We’re focused now on returning to full operational capacity to continue serving our community and to assist in recovery efforts for our fellow Floridians.”
The airport will open to arriving flights only at first. Parking facilities, the SkyConnect train, the Rental Car Center and other services will also be in operation by 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Travelers can then expect normal operations and departing flights “early Thursday morning”—TSA security checkpoints onsite will open between 4 a.m. and 4:15 a.m. on Thursday morning—along with food and retail options in the airport’s terminals.
Tampa is still alerting all travelers to first check with their airline before heading to the airport and also to arrive at least 2 hours before their departure. Depending on their destination, travelers might still experience delays or cancellations due to Idalia.
