Severe weather in and around Dallas is causing chaos at the city’s biggest airport on Friday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a high wind warning for areas along and west of I-35 in Dallas, expecting gusts up to 65 mph in some areas. The warning, issued around 7 a.m. local time, is in effect through 7 p.m. Friday.
The weather is already impacting flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). According to FlightAware, as of 6:45 a.m. local time Friday, more than 200 departures have been canceled, with another 200 or so arrivals also canceled.
Most of those cancellations are for flights from American Airlines, the largest operator at DFW, which has already canceled more than 200 flights on Friday.
American has issued a travel waiver for passengers traveling through March 14 at Dallas-Fort Worth, allowing them to change to another flight through March 16 without penalty or fare differences, as long as they keep their origin or destination city and rebook in the same cabin.
Travelers flying through Lubbock Smith International (LBB), an airport about 350 miles west of Dallas, are also dealing with similar issues on Friday caused by high winds. The NWS in Lubbock also has a wind warning out:
“A dangerous high wind and fire weather episode is expected tomorrow. Wind gusts up to 80 mph are forecast to affect most of the forecast area, leading to an extreme fire danger,” it said on Thursday night.
According to Flight Aware, about 20% of both the inbound and outbound Friday schedule at Lubbock has already been scrapped. American Airlines is also the largest carrier operating in Lubbock.
