Delta No Longer Allows Animals to Fly as Checked Baggage
On Tuesday, Delta Airline announced that starting March 1, 2016, it will only allow passengers to fly large animals on its cargo service, rather than as checked baggage.
Passengers flying Delta One premium service, members of the military with active transfer orders, and people in need of service animals will still be able to fly their pets as checked baggage. But others who took advantage of the more convenient, less expensive option, will now have to book their pets separately on the cargo service, something that can’t be done until 14 days before departure. The airline also will not guarantee that pets flying on the cargo service will be on the same flights as their owners.
The change comes after Delta lost a family’s cat at the San Diego Airport in August and a man’s dog at Los Angeles International Airport last November.
