South African Airways Launches New Airbus A350-900 from JFK
by Daine TaylorSouth African Airways, South Africa’s national flag carrier, has announced the recent launch of its new Airbus A350-900 on nonstop flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport.
The introduction of the new model Airbus, which is touted as being the most technologically advanced aircraft available for ultra-long international travel, is expected to set a new standard for one of the airline’s most popular routes.
“The addition of the A350-900 aircraft on our flagship route between New York JFK [and] Johannesburg displays the high level of commitment that SAA has to our North American market,” said Todd Neuman, executive vice president, North America, for South African Airways. “With this latest generation aircraft, SAA will significantly enhance our product with brilliant new features, while continuing to maintain our warm, award-winning South African hospitality for which we are world-renowned.”
The Airbus can accommodate up to 339 passengers, and boasts exclusive Premium Business Class Cabin features, such as fully flat-bed seats equipped with PC power and USB ports; an enhanced on-demand entertainment system featuring an 18-inch 1080P HD touch screen with extensive programming and noise-cancelling headphones; and gourmet meals and award-winning South African wines.
Additionally, the A350-900 reduces fuel burn by approximately 20% when compared to the current aircraft operating on the route, thereby significantly reducing carbon emissions.
The A350-900 will operate on SAA’s service on the New York route six days per week through Mar. 31, and will resume daily service on Apr. 1.
