United Airlines’ long-awaited premium economy addition appears to be on its way. In a message to employees yesterday, United said that “International premium economy is coming” and that the new product will apparently be called United Premium Plus.
“Later this year, we’ll begin to introduce United’s Premium Plus. Available on select international flights, United Premium Plus will give you more space, comfort and amenities,” the memo, which was published on BoardingArea yesterday, said.
According to the memo, United Premium Plus seats will include more space per seat, upgraded dining on china dinnerware, free alcoholic beverages, a Saks Fifth Avenue blanket and pillow, and more.
The option is expected to be delivered on United’s new 787-10 aircrafts, though it is not clear which routes it will be offered on. More details are expected to be announced on Tuesday when the airline delivers its earnings presentation.
With the news, United would be joining other airlines who have added, or are set to add, a premium economy option over the last couple of years.
American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have already both announced a premium economy product — American in late 2016 and then Delta in May 2017.
American’s option includes wider seats; personal on-demand entertainment offered up on larger seatback screens; noise-canceling headphones; global WiFi access; AC power outlets and USB ports at every seat; priority check-in and boarding; amenity kits; enhanced meal service, complimentary alcoholic beverages; and two free checked bags.
Delta’s includes wider seats with more recline and an adjustable leg, foot, and head rests; noise-canceling headphones; plated meals; and a dedicated flight attendant. Passengers also get access to in-seat power pods and Delta’s in-seat entertainment screen called Delta Studio.
Austrian Airlines announced in September that it had refitted its fleet of 11 Boeings 767s to accommodate a new premium economy class. Those seats will officially debut on Mar. 6 and have already gone on sale.
Hawaiian Airlines’ premium economy class, which it brands as “extra comfort,” is currently being offered on the airline’s fleet of Airbus A330s.
