Opportunities for Canadian travel advisors are growing, according to the 2022 Holiday Barometer, an annual poll from Generali Global Assistance, a provider of travel insurance. Sixty-one percent of Canadians say they’re ready to travel this summer (July through September), but only 42% of those who indicated they plan to travel have already booked their summer plans.
“The number of Americans and Canadians who are traveling this summer is a great sign for the industry and, with increased travel budgets, the future of travel is looking up,” said Chris Carnicelli, CEO of Generali Global Assistance.
According to the survey, Canadians are expected to spend an average of about $2,475 on their summer vacation, but they still plan to stay closer to home, favoring domestic trips over international travel. Those that are looking international getaways are eyeing the U.S. first, then France, Italy and the U.K.
As to what type of summer travel they’re looking for, Canadians are pretty evenly split between city breaks (38%), countryside getaways (37%), and seaside vacations (35%).
Canadians are also interested in travel insurance, in fact, more so than travelers from the United States, with 60% (vs. 38%) saying they are likely to buy insurance for an upcoming trip. Those traveling overseas are more likely to opt for travel insurance than those who plan to vacation domestically.
The 2022 Holiday Barometer survey was conducted by consumer research firm Ipsos between April 22 and May 13, and included 100 residents of the United States and Canada. This was the first year Canada was included in the survey.
