Bahamas Added To CDC Zika Travel Alert List

by Jessica Montevago  August 25, 2016

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added the Bahamas to its Zika travel alert list.

A locally transmitted case was reported on the island of New Providence, where the capital city, Nassau, is located, the CDC said.

The alert advises pregnant women to avoid travel to the area and other travelers take extra caution to avoid mosquito bites. Since the Zika virus can also been transmitted sexually, the CDC recommends travelers practice safe sex.

The news comes as Florida continues to deal with an outbreak in Miami-Dade County. Most recently, active transmission was confirmed in the heart of Miami Beach, between Eighth and 28th streets, and Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Governor Rick Scott is calling on the CDC to provide an additional 5,000 Zika antibody tests and 10,000 prevention kits.
