Video is surfacing taken by passengers onboard Delta Air Lines flight 4819, which crashed on landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport Monday afternoon.
In a now-viral video posted by RTN Canada and Real Toronto Network on Instagram, passengers can be seen exiting the plane just after the crash.
The plane, which had 76 passengers and 4 crew on board, ended up on its roof after the crash landing. Initial reports said 8 people were injured, however Monday night authorities increased that number to 18. Ornge – Ontario’s air ambulance service – said the injured included a child who was taken to Toronto’s Sick Kids hospital and two others were taken to hospital with critical injuries.
The crash caused chaos at an already chaotic airport, which was dealing with massive flight delays and cancellations due to a winter storm that had passed through the area on the weekend. The airport closed to all arriving and departing flights after the crash but re-opened at 5:00pm. Flight delays continue to be ongoing at Pearson however as the airport struggles to get caught up and travellers are encouraged to check their flight statuses before they head to the airport.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow wrote on social media, “I’m relieved to learn that all passengers and crew are accounted for after today’s plane crash at Toronto Pearson. Thank you to the first responders, crew and airport staff for their quick actions and commitment to keeping everyone safe.”
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada said it is sending a team to investigate. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on social media that it is assisting with the investigation.
